The first two weeks of a puppy's life may seem quiet — eyes closed, ears sealed, sleeping most of the day. But inside that tiny body, the nervous system is developing at an astonishing rate. Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) is a research-backed protocol that takes advantage of this sensitive window to produce puppies that are calmer, more adaptable, and better equipped to handle the stresses of life. What Is Early Neurological Stimulation?
Early Neurological Stimulation is a series of five brief, gentle exercises performed with each puppy once per day between days three and sixteen of life. The protocol was developed by Dr. Carmen Battaglia and is based on research originally conducted by the U.S. military's Bio Sensor program, which studied how early stress-inoculation affected canine performance in working dogs.
The exercises are simple and take only three to five seconds each. They are not about play or bonding in the traditional sense — they are about introducing mild, controlled neurological stimulation during a developmental window that is unique to early puppyhood and never returns.

The Five ENS Exercises
Each exercise is held for three to five seconds only — no longer. They are not intended to be stimulating in the same way as play. The goal is mild, brief neurological activation.

Why the First Two Weeks?
Puppies are born neurologically immature. Their eyes and ears don't open until around day 10–14. During days 3–16, there is a unique developmental window during which the neurological system is highly plastic — rapidly forming connections — but the puppy is not yet in the socialization phase (which begins around week three).
After day 16, the nervous system stabilizes and this window closes. You cannot go back and replicate the effects of ENS with older puppies. This is what makes the protocol time-sensitive and why it must be built into a breeder's standard care from the very first days of a litter's life.
Outside of this window — before day 3 and after day 16 — the exercises produce no measurable benefit and may actually cause stress if overdone. Precision in timing is part of why not all breeders incorporate ENS even when they're aware of it.
What Does the Research Show?
The Bio Sensor research found that ENS-stimulated dogs showed five distinct advantages over control groups:
1. Improved cardiovascular performance. ENS dogs showed stronger heart rates and greater cardiac efficiency under stress.
2. Stronger adrenal glands. Their adrenal glands were better developed, allowing a more calibrated stress response rather than an overwhelming one.
3. Greater tolerance for stress. When placed in stressful or novel situations, ENS dogs recovered faster and showed fewer signs of anxiety.
4. Greater resistance to disease. ENS dogs showed improved immune function in early studies.
5. Faster problem-solving. ENS dogs were quicker to explore and engage with challenges rather than freezing or withdrawing.

ENS Is Not the Same as Handling
It's worth being clear about what ENS is not. General handling — picking puppies up, talking to them, allowing children to gently interact — is valuable and important, but it is separate from ENS. The ENS exercises are specifically designed to produce neurological effects that normal handling does not replicate.

What to Ask a Breeder About ENS
If you are evaluating breeders and ENS matters to you, here are the questions to ask:
"Do you perform ENS, and during which days?" The correct answer is days 3–16. A breeder who says they "do ENS" but starts on day one or continues past day 16 is not following the protocol correctly.
"Do you do it with every puppy in the litter, every day?" Consistency matters. Skipping days or only doing it with some puppies reduces the effect.
"What other early development protocols do you use?" ENS is ideally part of a broader program that includes socialization, sound exposure, handling by multiple people, and environmental enrichment as puppies develop.
